Dr. Judith Brisman and Laura Collins Lyster-Mensh, MS will discuss the role of parents in the treatment of eating disorders.  Parental involvement is always needed but not everyone agrees as to what that involvement should look like and how it can fit into the work of a treatment team? Please join us for an interesting discussion about what works with parents, what doesn’t… and why.

Drs Brisman and St. Claire will discuss the complications involved when treating a college student with an eating disorder. What is needed to allow for effective treatment? What responsibilities do colleges have in terms of mandating care? How can you deal with parents if they live out of town? This talk will allow for an open discussion of how the eating disordered college student can best be treated both within and outside of the confines of the college arena. For New School Health Service Professionals Only.

Controversy abounds with regard to the role of the family in the treatment of eating disorders. When should the family be directly involved in the re-feeding of their anorexic teen or child? When will this kind of helping hurt? This talk will present an approach to treatment that interweaves direct behavioral intervention with an Interpersonal family systems treatment, allowing for both change in the disordered eating and an expansion and enhancement of family interchanges. Maudsley inspired Family-based treatment will also be explored in which parents directly feed their anorexic child. How to consider what best helps will be the focus of this talk. What should we do with each family-and why? This course will help therapists:

  • Identify the difference between a family based treatment approach versus a family systems approach.
  • Explain the basic principles underlying a systems approach which encourages parental disengagement from direct feeding of the AN child.
  • List the principles and benefits of a family-based treatment approach with young children and young teens.
